Under a beautiful tree
in a park near by,
an old woman knelt down
and started to cry.
“Look at me.” she wept and sobbed
“Look at the money in my pocket,
look at my dress of the finest silk,
look at my large golden locket. ”
“Oh dear tree” she begged in tears,
“Please let me be young again.
I never wanted these precious things,
but I was so unhappy when my age came.”
The tree answered in rustling,
it's branches moved without a breeze.
The old woman closed her eyes and shivered
for she suddenly began to freeze.
A warm sunbeam made her open her eyes,
she was lying in a field of marigold.
Under a nice clear summer sky,
a sweet summer breeze drove away the cold.
The lady looked down to her body
and cheered as loud as she possibly could.
For she was young and pretty now
and this feeling did her good.
She walked into the world
and lived a happy life.
The poor old lady
could finally revive.
But the worries came,
as you will soon find,
for everyone grew up,
while she stayed behind.
A long time later she returned to the tree,
and asked him to give her some age.
But the tree never answered her,
he just stood there in rage.
The lady spent numerous long years,
crying under the enormous tree.
Till one day he showed mercy for her,
and told her he would set her free.
Now between two of his roots,
a little snowdrop sheds a tear.
For she forever has to be born,
and forever to die every year.
