I stared blankly at the ruins of my hometown,
I’ve seen it destroyed countless times.
And yet time and time again, it scars my soul to its very core.
To see the charred remains of all those I once loved.
The Crystalline Towers wich adorned the skies,
All reduced to mere shadows of their former glory.
And as I walked amongst the ravaged buildings,
I pledged to myself that this was the last time.
The time of the last Rebirth has come.
And this time the light will be victorious,
I will not fail again. This time, there’ll be no running.
I was so consumed by my thoughts I didn’t even saw her coming.
She gently laid her hand on my shoulder,
I felt the warm tidings of energy rush towards it.
It made me feel strangely at ease,
And for the first time in what seemed to have been eons,
I felt a spark of hope.
“What happened here?” she asked, while she put her arms around me.
The first step in completing the prophecies has been taken here, I replied,
As it has been taken for countless times before.
“But why here ?, why not somewhere else, what’s so special about this place?”
It’s not the location that matters, but the circumstances, I said with an undertone of sorrow in my voice. This place is my torment, it is here to punish me.
“I don’t understand, what could you possibly have done to deserve this ?”
For forsaking my oaths, my family, my loved ones, but most of all, for abandoning the one I had sworn to protect with my very life. She was a mage, just like me, I was appointed by the communality to foresee in her training. But as the years past our relationship became more than that. We went beyond all rules when we decided to forge the Bonding, an ancient spell no one has used since the dawn of time. It fused our very essence into one, making us the most powerful of all when we stood united. Even though the Communality disapproved our actions, they could not take action, as we were the only ones who could stop the dark tides that were approaching. “what happened next?” , she wanted to know. We decided to make our stand here, we spend months in preparation to stop the evil that was coming. When it finally arrived, every mage from across the lands had headed our call and come to reinforce the communality. “But if all the mages were here, why didn’t it attack somewhere else ?” she informed. Because it was stronger then we ever thought. It broke through the barriers we had so carefully erected during all that’s time like a dragonfly trough a spider’s web. When I saw him approaching me, my courage fled my body. It towered more than twenty feet over me, an aura of pure chaotic power around it, as it tried to grab me, I teleported out of his path, abandoning the her and the Communality when they needed me the most. As I rematerialized I realized the price my cowardly escape had cost us. I saw him grab her in one of his claws, she fought every second as she was smashed into the same Crystalline Towers we had erected to aid us in our battle. When I realized what was happening I reallocated all my power to her, but I was to late, her very essence was thorn apart by the magical vortexes created by the Tower and welded into the crystals. Through the Bonding I felt the backlash of raw power seeking a conduct back into the earth through me. I died a thousand deaths in that one instant, and I would gladly die a million more, if It would undo my mistake. The Communality held me responsible for what had happened that day and they punished me by destroying the very continuum of time, allowing me to relive my mistake and pains forever, until I managed to break the circle. “Who was she?” she asked, saturated with specks of gold, tears welling up in her eyes. It was you, I whispered as I burst into tears.
*geen gedicht deze keer, maar een fragment uit een verhaal waar'k aan werk. Is't de moeite waard, of zal'k me toch maar bij poëzie houden ? *
